Course Descriptions
SLP711 Introduction to Evidence-Based Practice Concepts: This course will introduce the student to the role and importance of research in the rehabilitation professions. Critical thinking will be utilized to develop focused clinical questions, and to search existing literature for an answer to these questions. Course content will include essential research terminology; concepts of diagnostic accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and likelihood radios; clinical prediction rules; basic epidemiology and related statistics; patient-reported outcome measures.
SLP 802 Spanish for Health Providers: This course is designed to help health professionals achieve novice to novice-mid Spanish proficiency level (as defined by ACTFL). It will introduce basic and essential medical vocabulary, practical reference information, and medical notes written from a cross-cultural perspective. It will provide students with opportunities to apply the grammatical structure present in everyday situations that may be encountered at healthcare settings dealing with Spanish-speaking patients and personnel in the United States.
SLP810 Foundations for the SLPD Scholar-Practitioner: This course will be offered on-demand and must be taken prior to, or during, the first semester of the SLPD curriculum. The coursework will prepare the student to transition from a clinician to a scholar-practitioner.
SLP811 Qualitative Research for the Practicing Allied Health Professional: This course will review different qualitative research approaches and how they apply to allied health professionals. The course will require students to design, implement and analyze a clinically relevant qualitative research project.
SLP812 Implementation Science in Rehabilitation Sciences: This course is designed to provide students with practical experience in communicating clinical and research findings to a variety of stakeholders. Students will develop communication skills for various academic and clinical settings.
SLP 813 Evidence-Based Practice: Creating Original Research Designs: This course will overview the process of conducting original research including: development of research hypotheses, use of dependent and independent variables, disablement models, experimental design, data collection procedures, research methods, and ethical issues associated with the completion of human subject research. The course will require completion of an Introduction and Methods paper.
SLP 814 Professional Communication and Dissemination: This course is designed to provide students with practical experience in communicating clinical and research findings to a variety of stakeholders. Students will develop communication skills for various academic and clinical settings. This course requires on-campus participation for a summer intensive meeting.
SLP 900 Contemporary Topics in Professional Ethics: In this course, students will explore contemporary issues in workplace and clinical ethics. Topics will include decision-making models, research ethics, ethics in clinical practice patterns and settings (such as teletherapy, supervision, billing practices, and determining educational eligibility), and strategies to minimize risk.
SLP 901 Culturally Responsive Practices in Speech-Language Pathology: In this class, students will explore macro and micro level factors that influence health and educational outcomes. Students will explore diversity, equity, and inclusion topics. Students will draw on theory and clinical practice experiences while exploring culturally responsive practices to address disparities and promote equitable services.
SLP 902 Trauma, Resilience and Wellbeing for the Allied Health Professional: This course is designed to provide foundational knowledge for allied health professionals as it relates to trauma informed care, mental health first aid, and strategies to support wellbeing through an interdisciplinary and inclusive lens. This course will equip students with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate, holistic care that supports the emotional and psychological wellbeing of individuals served.
SLP 903 Effective Supervision in Professional Settings: This course examines best practices for supervising support personnel, emphasizing the importance of adhering to guiding documents for supervision requirements. Students will explore strategies for fostering supportive supervision relationships and gain skills for navigating difficult conversations with supervisees. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to enhance the effectiveness and inclusivity of their supervision practices.
SLP 920 Global Health Policy & Leadership: This course provides an in-depth analysis and framework for understanding global health policy and the impact on social, political, and economic systems and context. Students examine the research, evidence, and theory in global health policy and implications for advocacy practices to inform new policy initiatives. An examination of the role of government, private, and nonprofit entities in the United States and abroad is explored.
SLP 930 Applied Research and Practice: This course allows students to identify a mentor within a desired area of practice to assist in identifying knowledge and practice gaps. Students may opt to explore topics related to clinical practice skills, business development, teaching and learning, policy and advocacy, leadership development, and research experience. Students must have this course and the specific learning objectives approved by the program director prior to enrollment. The course will require a completed artifact that demonstrates completion of specific learning objectives. This course will run for two 8-week consecutive blocks for a total enrollment of 16 weeks. This course is required to be repeated.
SLP 940 The Educator: The Educator course provides students with inclusive and high impact practices for teaching in higher education and adult learning settings. The course focuses on evidence-based, equitable, interprofessional and innovative teaching and learning practices that meet evolving local, national and global societal needs for the diverse learner. The course prepares new and advanced educators with the essential tools to thrive and lead in academic settings.
