Content Knowledge and Applications
Students will be able to articulate and apply concepts, principles, and theories that promote the proper description, function, explanation, and interconnectedness of psychological phenomena. Students will have an intense, deepened appreciation and respect for psychology’s integrative themes (listed below these goals).

Scientific Inquiry and Critical Thinking
Students will learn to exercise and critique scientific methods, and embrace the high rigor of psychological research and the fundamental use of valid scientific tools and principles.

Values in Psychological Science
Students will be able to employ ethical standards in research and practice, and learn to channel their talents and potential toward the betterment of social systems, human resilience, and the improvement of our collective quality of life.

Communication, Psychological Literacy, and Technology Skills
Given our social nature, effective communication in both written and verbal form is a critical outcome for students. Students will be able to demonstrate psychological and technological literacy appropriate to the field.

Personal and Professional Development
Students will achieve proficient levels of academic and career readiness in order to be able to successfully transition to an advanced level of higher education and an aspiring career trajectory, respectively. They will also greatly enhance their interpersonal skills and effective emotional regulation, and form a life plan grounded in integrity. Students will be prepared to be compelling and effective leaders and change agents in their workplaces, communities, and families.

Psychological Science’s Seven Integrative Themes (APA, 2021a)

  1. Psychological science relies on empirical evidence and adapts as new data develop.
  2. Psychological science explains general principles that govern behavior while recognizing individual differences.
  3. Psychological, biological, social, and cultural factors influence behavior and mental processes.
  4. Psychological science values diversity, promotes equity, and fosters inclusion in pursuit of a more just society.
  5. Our perceptions and biases filter our experiences of the world through an imperfect personal lens.
  6. Applying psychological principles can change our lives, organizations, and communities in positive ways.
  7. Ethical principles guide psychological science research and practice.
